Day 13: Oribi Gorge - Coffee Bay

Your Best of South Africa trip continues to a part of South Africa that's still truly wild: the Transkei. The Transkei is the land of the Xhosa and it is also Nelson Mandela's birthplace. When driving through this land of rolling hills you'll see an occasional thatched hut, grazing herds of goats and, despite the low standard of living, you'll also see smiling people everywhere you look.

You'll find a long sandy beach, idyllically situated between green hills and the turquoise sea. The bay got its' name in 1893 when a ship full of coffee beans was ship wrecked there. Some of the coffee beans sprouted, however the plants did not survive and you won't find any coffee bean plants in the area. Spend the night in a cosy hotel with pool at the beach.
Cairo Egypt
 El Fishawy Cafe
El Fishawy is the best known café in Cairo
and a favourite of Nobel Prize winner Naguib Mahfouz
Mention Cairo, and the first things that come to mind are the pyramids. Why do I consider this unfortunate? Because the pyramids are a remnant of a dead civilization, and Cairo today is a living city of 16 million people. Let me suggest a better symbol: the cafés of Khan-el-Khalili, a living microcosm of Egypt’s metropolis.
Cairo’s cafés are many things at once. Sometimes, they have the social buzz of a nightclub or pub. You can often count on the Egyptian smoking a shisha next to you to strike up a conversation. I even saw some French tourists at a nearby table who seemed to be flirting with two Egyptian women in conservative Muslim headgear. Somewhere beyond the shisha haze was a family in party hats celebrating their kid’s birthday surrounded by golden trays crammed with large frothy milkshakes. A café isn’t a café without, well, introspective café types: reading, quietly sipping their dark mint tea, or scribbling away.
Cafés are habitually doorless and windowless. The interiors spill out onto the streets and the suq spills into the cafés. Cairo’s most famous café, the Fishawy, is a series of mirrors and ornate doorframes crammed into a through street. The street is used by shopkeepers, trinket vendors, and pedestrians, who brush against the tables. Sometimes the people-watching seems a little too intimate but this is Cairo: dense, chaotic, and wonderful.

Peruvian coffee is booming overseas, where 80 percent of global manufacturers use coffee beans from Peru, making it one of the most important producers in the world, reports El Comercio.

According to Gestión this year exports exceed $1 billion at a price that has been increasing over time. "Until March a quintal of coffee cost $270 and now it is already more than $280, so it is expected to reach the same volume exported in the past year," Gestión reported.

Korea, Busan & Japan, Tokyo

Dr Fish.

Look Up:

Sit back and relax with a book, a coffee… and an extremely ticklish pedicure courtesy of a tank full of ‘doctor fish’. The Dr. Fish Cafe in Busan, South Korea lets you do just that. You order a drink, and when you’re done, head over to the spa area where you wash your feet and then let the fish snack on your dead foot skin. Yum. The whole experience costs less than $10 USD.

Before you even see the coffee and tea menu at the Calico Cat Cafe in Tokyo, you’re presented with a menu of a different sort: a selection of cats from which to choose. Not to eat, you understand, but to pet and coo over. Guests are given complimentary bags of cat food and allowed to play with the cat of their choice. It may seem strange, but in this city – where owning a cat is often impractical – “commitment-free cat stroking” is an attractive option.

Virgin Cafe & What do you really want?

 Japanese Blog

pick the brain blog

What Do You REALLY Want?

how do you see yourself, what do you want in life? more friends, more brains, more love, more clothes?

The statement, “You can do anything you put your mind to,” leads us to believe that all you must do is imagine what you’d like to accomplish, set your mind to the task, and wait for success.
To a certain degree this is true. Focused intention combined with action is a powerful force. But the statement is misleading because it fails to mention the difficulty and necessity of focusing your mind on a specific goal.
Most of us don’t know what we want. We think we do, but we really don’t. We only know what we don’t want. We don’t want a boring job. We don’t want to be poor. We don’t want to disappoint our loved ones.
Knowing specifically what you want is much different than knowing what you don’t want. When you only know what you don’t want, your intentions aren’t focused. Consider this example.
Pete doesn’t want to be poor. He’s sick of earning less than his friends, and he’s determined to raise his status. To accomplish this goal, Pete could take many different paths. He could train for a high paying profession, such as doctor or lawyer. He could start his own company, go into real estate, or do many other things that would lead to acquiring wealth.
But Pete isn’t sure what he wants to do. He doesn’t know which path best fits his skills and personality, so he doesn’t resolve to follow any particular path.
Hoping to answer this question, he investigates a dozen possibilities, but as soon as he runs into adversity he decides that path isn’t for him and moves on to a new solution.
Pete’s actions aren’t focused. Although he works very hard, his efforts don’t build on each other. Rather than building one giant impenetrable sand castle, Pete has built twenty smalls ones that are easily toppled. He ends up confused and discouraged. Ultimately Pete’s lack of focus leads to failure.
Now, what if Pete had chosen a specific path? Suppose he decided on the law profession. His actions would have been clearly defined:
  • Get a high score on the LSAT
  • Attain letters of recommendation
  • Get accepted to a good law school
  • Decide on a field of law
  • Earn a law degree
  • Find a high paying job with a good law firm
A set of specific goals is much easier to achieve than a vague end goal like becoming wealthy. Being focused on a path gives Pete a logical set of actions to follow. Each accomplishment is one step closer to the final goal.
I think we can all agree that committing to a clearly defined path, regardless of which one, gives Pete the best chance of becoming wealthy.
But how can he choose a path if he doesn’t know what he wants? Maybe money isn’t his only goal. Maybe he wants to do something he loves at the same time. Maybe he can’t afford to go back to school. Reality is complicated, and Pete doesn’t want to commit too soon.
And that’s why he fails.
But I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. Most people don’t fit neatly into a predefined path. Forcing yourself into one may lead to success, but it probably won’t make you happy.
This is the point. If you want to be conventionally successful, to attain wealth and status, you need to choose a specific path (preferably something mainstream) and follow it to the letter.
On the other hand, if you aren’t particularly concerned with wealth or success, you can take your time searching for that perfect niche.
Just don’t wait too long to decide. Each moment you deliberate, your already committed competitors sprint further ahead.
But, then again, maybe life isn’t a race, and maybe the most interesting people follow a path all their own.

Why The Coffee Shop

Coffee Shops are perhaps the ultimate place to pick up girls. They have the best of the bars and the best of the daytime approaches. They are full of beautiful women, have a relaxed atmosphere and competition is slim. Find the right café and visit it often.

Golden Rules of Coffee Shop Pick Up

There are a few things that make the coffee shop approach special. All of these make the situation different from the other daytime strategies. Take a look and keep them in mind:
Rule #1: Conversation and interaction will be longer.
This is inevitable. Conversation will normally be long, perhaps even longer than an hour. You might go over more topics, thoughts and ideas than in any other kind of approach. That is, of course, if you are building rapport between you too.
This is great. It will make the interaction something like an instant first date. You’ll have to treat it as such if what you want is success. Have your dating skills well calibrated and work to build something big out of this. Read the first date mistakes, remember all of the girl’s possible indicators of interest and have a few anecdotes and stories handy for some laugh together.
Also, just in case, remember false time constraints. Maybe she fears that you’ll be speaking with her for too long. Relax her by telling her you’ll have to be somewhere quite soon. Then, if the she’s really into you just tell her you rather spend a few more minutes chatting with her.
Rule #2: You shouldn’t be that direct.
I know I told you countless times to be direct during the day. Fine, but this coffee shop approach is somehow different. Unlike other places this time you’ll have more time for conversation and for the interaction. This will make a casual talk more likely to succeed.
Just don’t play too safe. It won’t get you anywhere! So be flirty, interesting and fun. Don’t speak only about the mundane and ordinary, go beyond. Gently tease, use each opportunity to carve down into the deep feelings, emotions and ideas.
Rule #3: Looks, time and the people.
This is quite simple. The people who will visit the coffee shop will be different depending on the time of the day. Morning is different from lunch and so is the late afternoon. Who are your targets? Go to the coffee shop when the girls you like will be there.
Also remember your looks. Don’t look lousy: be well dressed. Get a shirt, a nice bag and, above all, look clean. Please do. Try to be as handsome as possible and quickly stand out from the other guys in the shop. Girls will notice and that will play in your advantage!

The Coffee Pick Up In Action

With the rules said, let’s move on to the strategies. It’s really similar to what you would do in a club or bar: open, engage, close. Here it goes:
A- Opening.
Opening shouldn’t be that hard. You’ll have at least a million to open with. What is the girl doing? Is there something cool you are doing that she should learn about? Think. An opinion, observation or just a few lines could open the conversation with ease.
This time you won’t be that constrained. A coffee place is more relaxed, much more open and less creepy that a bus, train or the street to approach. But open with confidence. Speak loud and clear, keep eye contact and smile. Also make sure you don’t invade her space too soon.
B- Talking.
Be natural and keep a nice conversation going. Be flirty, fun and make her enjoy talking to you. Your goal has to make her feel comfortable, nothing else. It’s really easier than you think; you just need to keep your line.
Speak to girls as if you had known them for long. Even if you met ten minutes ago, do it. It will make people feel good around go. Also avoid all conflictive topics, gently tease and make a focus on her. Speak passionately, don’t interview and never go too far.
C- Closing.
If you had a nice chat she’ll give you her number or email. It will be natural; you won’t need to force it. But always give a catch: invite her to a future party, tell her you could send her info about something, tell her you want her to mail you something, etc. Do it while the conversation is going and don’t look desperate.
Don’t look for something else. Trying to take her home this fast could probably ruin everything. Make sure you don’t do that. Instead focus on getting a second date, chatting a little bit more or doing something interesting together. That’s where the win is. Remember what to say on the phone too!
Enjoy your coffees!
